How a glowing nose became a global Christmas icon
If you grew up humming “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” while decorating your Christmas tree, you’re not alone but the story behind that famously shiny nose is even more heartwarming than the song itself. And because Rudolph has become one of the most beloved characters in our German Christmas Shop collection, we thought it was the perfect time to take you on a joyful little journey through his history.
Rudolph Was Born… in a Department Store?
Believe it or not, Rudolph isn’t an ancient legend like Saint Nicholas or the Christkind.
He was created in 1939 by a young copywriter named Robert L. May, who worked for Montgomery Ward.
May, a quiet, thoughtful man who had always felt like an outsider, was asked to write a Christmas story the store could give to children. He poured a lot of his own heart into it… and that’s how Rudolph, the small reindeer with the glowing red nose, was born.
Little did he know he was creating a Christmas legend.

A Misfit With Magic
From the very beginning, Rudolph stood out...literally. His bright red nose makes him different from all the other reindeer and they laugh at him for it. But May created Rudolph to be a celebration of uniqueness. A reminder that the thing that sets you apart can become the thing that lights your way.
And isn’t that the spirit of Christmas? Christmas has always been a season where the overlooked are lifted up, where kindness guides the way, and where even the smallest light can brighten the darkest night. Rudolph’s story reminds us that everyone has something special to offer and when we use our gifts for good, we help create the magic of the season.
The Story Spreads and the Song Changes Everything
Montgomery Ward’s little booklet was an instant hit. By 1946, more than 6 million copies had been given to families across the United States.
Then May’s brother-in-law, songwriter Johnny Marks, sprinkled musical magic onto the story. In 1949, Gene Autry recorded “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.”
It was an instant classic and Christmas was history made. Today, it’s one of the bestselling Christmas songs of all time sung in homes, Christmas shows, cars, and living rooms around the world every single holiday season.
Rudolph Crosses the Ocean
While Rudolph is an American creation, Europeans, especially German artisans, welcomed him into their Christmas traditions with open arms. Known for their intricate woodcraft, storytelling, and devotion to holiday folklore, artisans quickly found a place for the bright-nosed reindeer among their treasures.
And this is where one of our favorite versions of Rudolph enters the story…
